What Is A Consumer Unit?
What is a consumer unit?. A consumer unit, also known as a Fusebox, is the central hub of a property’s electrical system. It distributes electricity from the main supply to various circuits within the home. Consumer units have built-in safety devices which protect people from electrocution and appliances from overload.
How Does a Consumer Unit Work?
The consumer unit connects your home to the electricity supply from the grid. It divides the main electricity supply into smaller circuits that power different areas of your home. Its circuit breaker, or RCD, protects each of these circuits.
In the event of an electrical fault, such as a power surge or an overloaded circuit, the consumer unit will automatically shut off the affected circuit. This prevents electrocution, damage to your appliances and electrical fires.
Components of a Consumer Unit
A standard consumer unit contains several key parts:
Main Switch
This switch controls the overall power supply to the property, allowing you to turn off all electricity when needed, such as during maintenance or emergencies.
Residual Current Devices (RCDs)
RCDs monitor the flow of electricity. If an imbalance is detected, they immediately cut power to prevent electrocution.
Circuit Breakers
Circuit breakers automatically cut off electricity if they detect an electrical fault There are two main types:
- Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs): Protect individual circuits, such as lighting or appliances.
- Residual Current Breakers with Overcurrent (RCBOs): Combine the protection of MCB’s and RCDs, offering both overload and earth fault protection for individual circuits.
Why Upgrade to a Modern Consumer Unit?
If your home still has an old fuse box, you should upgrade to a modern consumer unit.
Current electrical regulations require all new Consumer Units to meet strict safety standards.
An outdated consumer unit may not meet current standards, and a traditional fuse box definitely won’t, leaving your home and its occupants vulnerable.
When to Consider a Replacement
Several signs may indicate it’s time to upgrade your consumer unit:
- Frequent tripping of circuit breakers
- Flickering lights or power surges
- An outdated unit with fuse wires instead of circuit breakers
- Overheating around the fuse box area
You may still find units with fuses instead of circuit breakers in older homes. Fuses rely on a wire that melts when overloaded, which must be replaced manually. Modern consumer units with MCBs, RCBOs, and RCDs are much safer and more convenient.
Professional Consumer Unit Installation
A qualified Electrician must carry out any work on your consumer unit. Periodic inspections (EICR) are also important to ensure everything functions safely and in line with UK regulations.
