Domestic Electrical Services
Over the years, TM Hughes & Son Electricians have undertaken work in many homes in and around Maldon. Our Electricians have lots of real-world experience, having done practically every Electrical job you can think of.
Typical Electrical work includes consumer unit installation and upgrades, replacement and fitting of sockets, full and part rewiring, earthing and bonding, lighting, outdoor power etc.
All works completed to a high standard conforming to the current legal requirements and Part P building regulations.
Electrical work’s always done in an efficient and tidy style, ensuring minimal disruption to your everyday life.
Consumer Units
We install new consumer units and upgrade old fuse boxes to modern BS EN 61439-compliant RCD consumer units.
Old fuse boxes feature in older homes around Maldon. While they are not illegal, they are not as safe as the latest consumer units, which feature Residual Current Devices (RCD fuses) and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs).
The RCDs protect you and your family from electrocution should anyone accidentally touch a live wire, while MCBs protect your circuits and appliances from overload and electrical fire.
Residual Current Operated Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection (RCBOs) can also be fitted, which does the job of both RCDs and MCBs.
In the event of an electrical fault, the RCD, MCB or RCBO will instantly ‘trip’ cutting power and are easily reactivated with the built-in switch.
Old fuses cut power by melting fuse wire and severing the connection, not as fast as new fuses and a fire risk.
If you have an old fuse box or dated consumer unit, let us come over and give you a free quote for an upgrade.
Socket Installs & Upgrades
As time goes on, the average homeowner uses more and more appliances. A common complaint is that there are not enough sockets in one’s home.
Our Maldon Electricians can add more power points to your home in the most convenient of locations.
Modern-day sockets are available with many built-in features such as built-in RCDs (that cut power in case a cable’s ever accidentally cut) and USB ports, so now you can charge your phone and run appliances from the same socket.
Appliances such as cookers and boilers are hardwired to connection units with built-in fuses.
If you have recently decorated or refurbished your home, you’ll likely want socket faceplates that compliment the new look of your living spaces.
We can upgrade existing sockets at a very reasonable cost by changing the old faceplates to new ones. Replace the old white plastic with stainless steel, other metals, coloured plastic and even wood.
Sockets should be upgraded if they’re getting hot, are cracked, hanging off the wall or have loose screws. Any of these symptoms are a safety issue and should be looked at ASAP.
Sockets can be added outdoors also, very handy for lawnmowers, outdoor power tools and portable outdoor lighting. All outdoor sockets are waterproof, and dustproof with protective spring covers.
RCD sockets can be fitted outdoors for maximum protection.
Rewiring Full & Part
Electrical cables last around 30 years. You might need a rewire if your home hasn’t been rewired in the previous three decades.
Homes should be checked every ten years for deteriorated wires.
We can carry out a full survey of the cables in your home and determine if you need a full or part rewire. We’ll also check your consumer unit and ensure it’s safe.
We also regularly carry out wiring installations on new build properties and extensions.
All wiring/rewiring work is done to the latest regulations utilising modern twin and earth cables that cope with the demands of the present-day home.
Lighting
Lighting makes or breaks the atmosphere of your home. Done right lighting enhances the mood and feel of each room, creating comfort and pleasantness.
Our electricians are experts in lighting design and installation with lots of knowledge of all lighting types and will design each room following your personal preferences.
Different activities are carried out in the living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. Each room needs different lighting set up for the best ambience.
General lighting’s used to illuminate these rooms; lights include chandeliers, recessed lights and spotlights, all strategically placed for maximum effect.
Task lighting’s fitted in areas of the kitchen, bathroom, and home office to efficiently carry out your day-to-day tasks.
Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting installations make outdoor areas safe, secure and comfortable homes with sensor-activated security lighting are far less likely to be burgled. You can also see where you’re going when outside after dark, reducing the chances of an accident.
Many Maldon residents have a garden, and landscape lighting installed, creating an outdoor living space for the warmer months.
We fit both modern LED lights and traditional halogen bulb-type lights installed on walls, bollards, the ground and in decking.
There are many types available, and again, one of our Electricians will design a lighting installation in accordance with your outdoor space.
Appliance Installation
We offer an electrical appliance connection and installation service.
Appliances such as built-in ovens are wired into the electrical supply on their own circuit (If there’s no circuit present, we can install one for you).
The process is swift with no disruption.
One of our team will isolate the cooker circuit, remove your old appliances and wire in the new ones.
Tests are run after installation to ensure everything’s safe and working as it should.
Earthing & Bonding
Any electrical work undertaken in your home will include the checking of the earthing and bonding, an essential part of the electrical system that carries the current to earth, preventing electrocution.
After, every installation, upgrade or repair, electricians make sure the earthing and bondings are up to the legal BS7671 standard.
Electrical Installations
We offer domestic and commercial electrical installations that cover all aspects of the electrical system found in homes and businesses.
We can completely rewire your home, installing a new consumer unit with sockets and lights where you want them. Or we can upgrade your existing system to work better with your day-to-day living.
If you run a business, we can install an electrical system to work with your production and machinery.
Fault Finding & Repairs
Various faults can occur within electrical systems and components such as lights, switches, sockets and consumer units, smells, noises and visual indications of a fault that need looking at by a qualified electrician.
Faults include flickering lights, buzzing consumer units, burning smells, and crackling noises.
One of our electricians will test your system to establish the location of the fault.
Replacements of parts such as faulty sockets and fuses or adjustments such as securing electrical wires are usually all it takes—a quick and inexpensive procedure.
Outdoor Power
We offer an outdoor power installation service for local residents with outdoor areas.
Outdoor sockets are installed in convenient positions on exterior walls.
After installation, you can connect outdoor lighting or power tools.
Mowing the lawn is made easier with an outdoor socket, as you no longer have to run an extension lead indoors.
The sockets are hard-wearing and waterproof, featuring spring-loaded covers so no unwanted debris or moisture can get inside the electrical elements.
RCD’s fuses are built-in as a standard for increased safety. They are protecting you in the event of a cut power cord.
Security Lighting
We offer a security lighting design and installation service for the homes and businesses of the local area.
If your property is dimly lit, then it’s a prime target for burglars and thieves.
This is true if it’s a home or commercial premises.
However, these unwanted intruders are easily deterred with security lighting, which illuminates dark areas, the sort of areas criminals like to operate in.
One of our electricians will establish any at-risk areas around your home or business.
Lights can then be fitted to come on whenever anyone walks into the areas (motion sensor lighting) or to come on when it gets dark, so there’s light all night.
Research has shown that vulnerable doors, windows and walls are far less likely to be targeted if they’re illuminated.
All security lighting fitted is weatherproof and will last many years outside.
All lighting provided includes modern energy-efficient LED bulbs, ensuring your new security lighting system is cheap to run.
Electrical Emergencies
Emergency Electricians are available in Maldon for both domestic and commercial call-outs 24 hours a day, seven days a week for both Domestic and Commercial properties with no call-out charges. Call: 01621 881560

Not a supply fault? Check the fuses in your consumer unit; a fuse may have tripped, causing the loss of power. Turn the fuse back on.
If the power doesn’t come back on and all fuses are on, then the power cut could be down to several reasons. We’ll diagnose and fix the fault with your electrical system.
We recognise the urgency of electrical emergencies and are committed to providing a timely and efficient response with a visit on the same day.

Landlords Certificates/EICR
By law, landlords must ensure their property’s safe for their tenants. We offer landlords Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) and Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing)
EICR and PAT Testing ensure your rented property’s electrical installation is safe at the start of each tenancy and maintained to a safe condition throughout the tenancy, and appliances are safe with CE markings.
Enabling you to prove a qualified Electrician has checked your properties is safe and legal while validating your insurance and covering you in the event of an electrical accident.
EICR’s are recommended every five years (on both HMO and non-HMO properties ) and at the start of a new tenancy. PAT Testing’s only a legal requirement for HMO landlords. Nevertheless, many private landlords carry out PAT testing anyway for extra protection.
Don’t worry. Both EICR and PAT Testing is non-expensive. During the EICR, we’ll inspect every part of the electrical system, testing the consumer unit, earthing, fuses, wiring, sockets and light fittings. Any faults found will be rectified, and a certificate will be issued on completion.
PAT Testing involves inspecting and testing portable appliances such as fridges, freezers, washing machines, hoovers, irons, etc., making sure they’re safe for your tenants to use.
Smoke & Heat Alarms
Modern smoke and heat alarms should be in every home, at least one on each floor.
The alarms should also be connected so they all sound at the same time.
Alarms should be wired into the main’s electricity supply, so they always work.
It’s amazing how many homeowners let the smoke alarm batteries go flat and don’t replace them.
We offer a full smoke and heat alarm installation service undertaken by professional electricians.
Risk assessments are carried out in each home. The residents are also taken into consideration so we can design and fit a system geared towards the vulnerable if required.
A smoke and heat alarm system are designed and fitted so an alarm is placed in the correct areas.
The alarms are interlinked, connected to the mains supply and feature backup batteries, so the alarms work if electricity is absent.
