How Long Does It Take To Rewire A House?
How Long Does It Take to Rewire a House? The time it takes to rewire depends on the size of the house, its layout, and its condition. Below is a guide to the estimated timeframes for different property sizes.
Property Type | Estimated Duration |
---|---|
2-Bedroom House | 3–8 days |
3-Bedroom House | 5–10 days |
4-Bedroom House | 7–15 days |
5-Bedroom House | 10–14 days |
6-Bedroom House | 14–20 days |
2 Bedroom House
Rewiring a 2-bedroom house typically takes between 3 and 8 days.
The smaller size of a 2-bedroom house means fewer sockets, switch circuits and rooms to wire, but areas like kitchens and bathrooms, which are more complex to wire, can increase the time.
3 Bedroom House
For a 3-bedroom house, the rewiring process usually takes 5 to 10 days. These homes are often the most common size for families, so they have multiple circuits and a higher number of sockets, lighting points, and appliances to accommodate.
4 Bedroom House
A 4-bedroom house typically takes 7 to 15 days to rewire due to more rooms, circuits, and wiring routes. These homes may also have additional bathrooms, utility rooms, or offices requiring dedicated circuits.
5 Bedroom House
Rewiring a 5-bedroom house usually takes 10 to 14 days. 5-bedroom homes typically have more advanced electrical systems with features like external sockets, security systems, or garden lighting, which can add to the rewiring time.
6 Bedroom House
Rewiring a 6-bedroom house usually takes 14 to 20 days, depending on the layout and the features included. 6-bedroom homes often have bespoke electrical requirements, such as multiple consumer units, advanced lighting systems, and additional circuits for entertainment areas, home offices, or outbuildings.
The size and complexity of a 6-bedroom house mean that the work must be carefully planned and executed to minimise disruption.
What Happens During a Rewire?
Rewiring a house involves several stages. The process begins with a survey of the existing electrical system. Your Electrician will then design a new system that meets your requirements while adhering to current safety regulations.
Once the plan is in place, the old wiring is removed, and the new circuits are installed. The work involves replacing wiring, installing back-boxes, sockets, switches, and lighting fixtures and upgrading the consumer unit.
In many cases, walls and ceilings must be chased to accommodate the new cables, which will be repaired after installation.
Finally, the Electrician will thoroughly test the new system to ensure it is safe and fully operational. Upon completion, an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued. The EIC confirms the work complies with building regulations.
Factors That Influence Rewiring Time
Several other factors influence Rewring time, which include:
Age & Condition Of The Property
Older houses often have solid walls that need to be chased. Modern homes with drywall can be quicker as wires can be fished through the walls. The electricians might encounter unforeseen structural/building material issues, which can add to the time needed to rewire.
Access & Occupancy
Rewiring is faster in an empty property, as the Electrician can work without restrictions. In occupied homes, additional time is needed to make the property safe for daily use and to clean up after each day’s work.
Amount Of Sockets, Switches & Circuits
The more sockets, switches, and lighting circuits are required, the longer the rewiring work will take. This is particularly true for properties with multiple hardwired appliances, underfloor heating, or outdoor lighting.
