Upgrades To Your Electrical System
Upgrading your electrical system brings your home into the 21st century. As our standard of living has increased over the years, so have our electrical requirements. Some older Brentwood homes have electrical systems in need of upgrading.
Powerpoints can be added and upgraded with new faceplates that match your modern decor and have USB ports and built-in RCD fuses. Light switches can be upgraded or moved also.
Outdoor powerpoints are ideal for power tools and plug-in lighting. We install weatherproof outdoor powerpoints with sprung covers, which work very well with lawnmowers, no more extension leads running from inside.
Extra telephone points are handy in modern homes, especially for wifi routers, we can also undertake upgrades to your internet system. Circuits can be wired in for appliances such as cookers, hobs and boilers, which we can install for you also.
Smoke alarms are an essential safety feature. If your a homeowner wired in smoke alarms offer paramount safety as they’re wired in. They also include back-up batteries in case of power failure. If you’re a landlord wired in smoke alarms are a legal requirement. We install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms which are necessary if there are any fuel-burning appliances in your property.
Consumer Units
We install and upgrade Consumer units to the latest 17th edition regulations
Your consumer unit controls the flow of electricity in your home, delivering power to every circuit. Mains electricity comes into your home from the street through a safety cut out device, then the electricity meter before reaching the consumer unit.
The consumer unit houses a mains switch (so you can turn the power on/off) and various fuses known as residual current devices (RCD’s) and miniature circuit breakers (MCB’s). Some consumer units utilise residual-current circuit breakers with overcurrent protection (RCBO’s).
The consumer unit uses the RCD’s, MCB’s and RCBO’s to protect from electrocution, electrical fires and overload damage to circuits and appliances. In the event of a fault, the fuse will trip instantly cutting power.
The RCD’s function is to prevent electrocution and fires. The MCB protects circuits and also prevents fires. RCBO’s protect everything.
Modern consumer units are constructed from non-combustible metal (as per regulations) in the event of a fire within the consumer unit the fire’s contained within the metal housing.
Plastic consumer units are still widely present throughout homes in Brentwood; they are not illegal; they are just not as safe as metal consumer units. Old fuse boxes which use traditional wire fuses are still present in some older homes. If you have a plastic consumer unit, it’ll be a good idea to start thinking about upgrading. If you have a traditional fusebox, an upgrade is an urgent priority.
If you have any concerns about your existing consumer unit or are considering an upgrade get in touch and speak to one of our electricians.
Rewiring
We offer full and part rewiring for all domestic properties, new builds and extensions
When rewiring the first step is for an electrician to inspect your wiring. Preferably wiring should be checked every 10 years. Generally rewiring needs undertaking every 30 years, although wiring can last a lot longer.
Once domestic wiring has passed, it’s best and started deteriorating. A rewire is needed. Rewiring brings your home up to the latest regulations, allows your electrical system to cope with the demands of modern-day living and ensures optimal safety, especially when combined with a new 17th edition consumer unit.
When rewiring takes place, we carefully plan the process to make it as least disruptive as possible. Once complete we’ll check the earthing and bonding also making sure it works and adheres to the required BS7671 standard.
Extensions and major refurbishments will require alterations to your consumer unit and maybe even an additional consumer unit, along with new wiring. We can do everything and make sure the wiring installation conforms to the required Part P building regulations.
