Signs You Need A New Consumer Unit
- It is over ten years old: If your fusebox is more than ten years old, it should be inspected by an Electrician to ensure it’s safe and up to the current standards.
- It is old and outdated: If your fusebox is mounted on wood and houses traditional wire fuses, it’s outdated and likely decades old. Although not illegal, they are not as safe as modern Consumer Units and should be replaced ASAP.
- It is frequently tripping: If your fuses inside your current Consumer Unit are constantly tripping, there’s a fault in the Electrical system, with a fuse or the Consumer Unit itself. An inspection by an electrician is in order to establish the fault and a remedy.
- You are adding new electrical circuits: If you plan to add new electrical circuits to your home, you may need to upgrade your Consumer to accommodate the increased load.
- It is damaged: If your fusebox is physically damaged or corroded, it may not function correctly and could be dangerous. It should be replaced.
- It is not up to current regulations: Safety regulations for electrical systems change over time, and if your fusebox does not meet regulations, it may need to be replaced to ensure the safety of your home.
It is essential to consult with a qualified electrician to determine if your Consumer Unit needs to be replaced and to undertake a replacement safely. We will help you.
How A Consumer Unit Works
A Consumer Unit (also called a fuse board or fuse box) is a central hub that distributes electricity to all the circuits in your home.
The Consumer Unit contains a series of RCD fuses (AKA circuit breakers) that are designed to protect people from electrocution and the electrical circuits and appliances from overloads.
When electricity flows through a circuit, it passes through an RCD fuse (Residual Current Device) which measures the current.
If the circuit functions normally, the electricity flows freely through the circuit and powers the electrical devices connected to it. However, if the circuit becomes overloaded, the RCD fuse ‘trips’ cutting power to the circuit.
Cutting the flow of electricity prevents the circuit from being damaged or a person being electrocuted. To restore power to the circuit, the fuse or circuit breaker is reset (via a switch on the RCD)
A regulation standard Consumer Unit is essential to ensure the safety of those in your home and to prevent damage to the electrical system and the potential for electrical fires.
If you have any concerns about your Consumer Unit or if it is not functioning correctly, it is important to have it inspected by a qualified electrician.
