Who can carry out an EICR?
Who can carry out an EICR? An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) can only be carried out by a qualified and insured Electrician.
A certified Electrician will have the right training, knowledge, and experience in inspecting and testing fixed electrical installations.
Understanding Who Can Carry Out an EICR
Electrical safety in homes and businesses is not something that should be taken lightly.
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) ensures wiring, sockets, consumer units, and other fixed electrical systems are in a safe and usable condition.
However, not every Electrician is qualified to carry out this type of inspection. An EICR requires specific skills, expertise and testing competence.
What Is an EICR?
An EICR is a detailed inspection and test of the electrical installation within a property. It identifies any defects, damage, wear, or non-compliance with the latest wiring regulations (BS 7671). As well as potential risks such as electric shock or fire hazards.
EICRs are legally required for rental properties in England. They are strongly recommended for homeowners and businesses at periodic intervals. Typically, every five to ten years, depending on the type of property.
Who Is Qualified to Carry Out an EICR?
Only an Electrician with the correct qualifications and experience can issue a valid EICR. This means they must be trained in the inspection and testing of electrical installations, not just in standard installation work.
Qualifications such as a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrical Installations and additional certification in inspection and testing (e.g. City & Guilds 2391 or equivalent) are typically required. They must also have up-to-date knowledge of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
Industry Registration and Accreditation
While not required by law, using a registered Electrician ensures a capable Electrician carries out your EICR.
Registered with bodies such as:
- NICEIC: (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting)
- NAPIT: (National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers)
- ELECSA (now part of NICEIC)
- Stroma
Choosing an Electrician registered with one of these organisations helps guarantee your EICR is carried out to the required standards.
Why Competence Matters
Hiring someone unqualified to carry out an EICR is risky.
An incomplete or inaccurate inspection may miss faults, resulting in unsafe electrical systems being left in service.
- For landlords, this could result in non-compliance with legal obligations and even invalidate insurance cover.
- For homeowners, it could mean living with hidden dangers which pose serious safety risks.
How to Check if an Electrician Is Qualified
Before booking an EICR, ask the Electrician for their inspection and testing qualifications, as well as proof they are up to date with the latest wiring regulations.
Verify their membership with an official body and look at their reviews or references from previous customers.
Choosing the Right Electrician for an EICR
An EICR should only ever be carried out by a qualified and capable Electrician.
Choosing someone with the right training and, ideally, registration with an approved body ensures safety, compliance and peace of mind.
By taking the time to check credentials, you’ll be confident your property’s electrical system is in safe hands.
