Where can I find my EICR certificate?
You will usually find your EICR certificate in your email inbox, with your Electrician, or with your landlord or letting agent. Most Electricians send the Certificate as a PDF after the inspection, so email is the first place to check. Landlords must also keep a copy, which they can give to tenants on request. If you cannot locate it, the Electrician who did the inspection should be able to resend it.
Understanding Where EICR Certificates Are Stored
The Electrical Installation Condition Report is an important record which confirms the condition of a property’s wiring.
Homeowners, landlords, and agents often need to know where the Certificate is kept, especially when it is required for a sale, tenancy, or insurance.
EICRs are typically stored digitally these days, although some Electricians still issue printed copies. Knowing where to look saves time and prevents booking a new inspection when you already have a valid certificate.
Check Your Email First
Most electricians issue EICR certificates as PDF files, sent immediately after the inspection.
Search using terms such as:
- “EICR”
- “Electrical Installation Condition Report”
- The Electrician or the company name
Also check:
- Junk or spam folders
- Archived or filtered mail
- Work email accounts (if you sometimes use them for home admin)
If the Certificate was issued a few years ago, check older device backups or cloud folders as well.
Ask the Electrician Who Completed the Report
If you cannot find the Certificate in your email or physical paperwork, the quickest solution is to contact the Electrician who carried out the EICR.
Electricians generally keep records, which means they can resend the original Certificate at no extra cost.
If Your Electrician Is NICEIC or NAPIT Registered
Many electricians register with certification bodies such as:
- NICEIC
- NAPIT
- ELECSA (now part of NICEIC)
These bodies hold job records, which means they can confirm details of an EICR if needed.
They may not provide the Certificate directly, although they can assist you in reaching the Electrician who issued it.
Landlords & Letting Agents
Tenants must receive a copy of an EICR by law. Current rules require landlords to keep a copy of the Certificate and give one to tenants when they move in.
If you rent your home, check:
- Your tenancy welcome pack
- Email trails with your agent
- Any digital property folder which the agent created
Letting agents should hold copies of every rental property on their books, making them a reliable source if you misplace yours.
If You Recently Bought a Property
Many homeowners discover their EICR is included in their home-buying paperwork.
Surveyors, solicitors and estate agents routinely collect electrical documents during the sale process.
Common places to look include:
- Digital folders supplied by your solicitor
- Emails exchanged during conveyancing
- Survey reports which occasionally reference electrical safety paperwork
If your purchase included electrical upgrades or a recent rewire, the EICR will usually be stored alongside the installation certificates.
Your Own Paper Files
Some Electricians still provide paper copies, which means your Certificate could be stored with important household documents.
Useful places to check include:
- Filing cabinets
- Folders used for boiler, heating and appliance paperwork
- Plastic wallets were supplied during the past electrical work
If the inspection occurred several years ago, the original Certificate may be among older property documents.
If You Still Cannot find the Certificate
Losing an EICR is common. If you cannot locate it anywhere and you are unsure who completed the inspection, you may need a new report.
This is often the case when:
- You have owned the home for several years.
- You recently moved in, and the previous owner did not supply the electrical paperwork.
- You let the property and need evidence for compliance
- The Certificate has expired or is close to expiry
Rented homes require an EICR every five years. Many homeowners choose an EICR every 5-10 years for safety and peace of mind.
How to Avoid Misplacing Your EICR in Future
Simple steps help avoid misplacing your EICR:
- Save the PDF to cloud storage
- Keep a digital backup on your phone or laptop
- Create a dedicated property folder for electrical and heating documents
- Store printed copies in a single place
These habits make the Certificate easy to find when needed for tenants, buyers, insurers or tradespeople.
When a New EICR Is Worth Considering
Even if you find your Certificate, an updated EICR is useful.
Consider a new EICR when:
- You are planning to let the property
- You are preparing to sell and want buyers to see recent tests
- You have upgraded your consumer unit, rewired or added new circuits
- You’re experiencing electrical issues
A new EICR ensures safety and provides clear evidence of the condition of your electrical installation.
