Upgrading Wiring in Epping Homes

Homes in Epping vary significantly in age and style, ranging from contemporary new builds to historic properties full of character. Many of these homes still contain electrical systems that date back several decades, raising serious questions about safety, efficiency, and compatibility with modern life.

TM Hughes & Son offers specialised rewiring services for homeowners throughout Epping, providing solutions tailored to each property’s unique needs.

Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

It’s important to understand the signs that indicate Rewiring may be needed. Persistent issues such as flickering lights, regular tripping of circuit breakers, or a burning smell from sockets are clear indicators of a dated electrical system.

Older homes in Epping frequently have insufficient circuits or outdated fuse boards, and they cannot support the load placed by modern appliances. Traditional fuseboxes and fuses are also a fire risk.

Homes built before the 1980s typically have wiring systems that can’t cope with current electrical demands. Older cables often have deteriorated insulation over time and are brittle or cracked. These issues pose a risk of short circuits or electrical fires. An inspection by one of our Electricians will quickly establish whether your home’s wiring meets current safety standards or if it needs upgrading.

Full or Partial Rewiring?

We provide Full and Partial Rewiring:

Full Rewiring

Full Rewiring involves replacing all old cabling, sockets, switches, and consumer units. Everything is removed and renewed according to the latest regulations, which ensures that the electrical system can handle the demands of modern living.

Replacing all wiring removes the hidden risks that may arise from decades of wear and tear. Full Rewiring also allows rearranging the location of sockets and light fittings. You can add more sockets for convenience or place them where they are most useful in each room. A well-planned full rewire ensures your home is better equipped for technology and future renovations.

We have experience with full rewires in many properties around Epping. This includes traditional terraced houses, semi-detached homes, bungalows, and larger detached properties. Each full Rewire is customised to meet the unique needs of the homeowner.

Partial Rewiring

A partial rewire is ideal when specific problem areas need attention. It may be that most of your wiring is still functioning properly, yet certain rooms or circuits have issues.

A partial rewire will resolve localised problems and ensure that the rest of your electrical system is safe. This is often suitable for homeowners who have recently renovated or extended part of their property and need to upgrade the wiring in that section.

Kitchens are frequently the focus of partial rewires because they house high-powered appliances that place heavy demands on electrical circuits. Another popular option involves wiring a loft or garage conversion and connecting to the existing electrical system, ensuring that these newly built spaces have modern and safe connections.

Partial Rewiring costs are more manageable when compared to a full rewire, and the work is generally completed within a shorter timeframe.

The Rewiring Process with TM Hughes & Son

Before any rewiring work begins, an electrician will conduct a free survey to determine if you need a rewiring and the best course of action for Rewiring. This involves checking the current wiring, consumer unit, sockets, switches and any existing issues you may be experiencing.

Once the survey is complete, the Electrician will recommend a full or partial rewire and provide a no-obligation quote.

Professional Installation

A typical Rewire starts with planning the new wiring routes. This is an important step because it determines where sockets, switches, and lighting points will be located.

The Electricians replace outdated cables with new wiring. During this phase, walls and floors may need to be temporarily accessed to remove or install cables.

When the wiring is installed, a new Consumer Unit switches, and sockets are fitted. We’ll minimise disruption as much as possible during the project, although you should be prepared for some disturbance.

Floorboards may be lifted, and plaster may need to be cut to access wiring channels. On completion of the Rewiring, all damaged surfaces are refitted or made good.

Completion and Certification

After installation, testing is carried out to guarantee compliance with the required regulations (BS 7671:2018). We’ll provide certification upon completion.

The certificate proves that a certified Electrician has installed your home’s electrical installation, meets British Standards and fully complies with current regulations.

Compliance ensures your new electrical installation is safe and meets the legal requirements for insurance and future property sales.
