Consumer Units
We install and upgrade consumer units, the most important part of your electrical system. Power to your home is switched on and off via the Consumer Unit (also known as the fuse board).
The Consumer Unit contains fuses that trip when overloaded, stopping the power flow, preventing electric shock, electrocution (should anyone accidentally touch a live wire in your home), and overloading the electrical system and appliances.
Modern Consumer Units use a combination of RCD, MCB and RCBO fuse. Each has a switch that ‘trips’ in the event of overload, cutting power. Fuses are reactivated by flicking the switch back on.
Each part of your electrical system has a fuse, for example, sockets, lighting, cooker, smoke alarms etc. RCDs (Residual Current Devices) protect against electrocution and electrical fire, while MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) protect the circuits and appliances from overheating and overloading.
A combination of both RCDs and MCBs are utilised, providing full protection to your home at an affordable price.
RCBO fuses do the job of both RCD and MCB fuses, protecting both people and circuits/appliances. While they are the safest and preferred option when installing/upgrading consumer units, they are the most expensive.
All consumer units fitted are built from non-combustible metal in accordance with the latest wiring regulations. When fitting or upgrading a unit, we’ll ensure your home is safe and legal.
If you live in an older home, you may still have a traditional ‘fuse box’, in which case an upgrade is highly recommended. Old fuse boards are common in older-style Southend homes. While they still work and are legal, they are not as safe as modern Consumer Units.
Is it time you had a new Consumer Unit fitted?
Sockets
The modern-day home uses many portable electrical appliances; some older properties don’t have enough power points.
Our Southend Electricians can add new sockets to your home in any location of your choice.
Additionally, we can install sockets into new build properties and extensions.
Sockets are powered by live, neutral and earth cables connected to your consumer unit.
The cable runs around your home, connecting to other sockets on the way and finally back to the consumer unit. This installation is known in the Electrical trade as the ‘ring main’.
The live cable connects to the back of the faceplates so you can plug in and power your appliances.
The faceplates screw into backboxes inside the wall (sometimes on the wall). The backbox keeps the cable out of the way, preventing electrocution.
It’s essential that faceplates are not loose, missing screws or cracked; this is a potential electrocution hazard.
We can replace and upgrade old and damaged faceplates. Standard white plastic, decorative plastic, metal, stainless steel and decor wood styles are available so you can match your sockets with your interior decoration.
New sockets include one, two and three gangs (single, double or triple) available with built-in RCDs and USB ports so you can run your appliances while charging your smartphones. We’ll fit any socket you may require, including appliance switches, cooker switches, ethernet sockets, telephone sockets, shaver units, fused connection units (for directly wired appliances) and more.
Adding Power to your outdoor areas with outdoor sockets allows you to use lawnmowers, power tools and portable outdoor lighting without extension leads running from inside the house (which are inconvenient, quickly pulled out and a trip hazard). RCD sockets are the best option outdoors. Preventing electrocution if you ever cut through a cable while mowing the lawn or trimming a hedge.
Lighting
TM Hughes Electricians are lighting experts with many years of experience in lighting installation, upgrades and repair.
Expert lighting design improves the feel and atmosphere of your home, making day-to-day activities easier while enhancing security.
We fit all types of lighting, including general, accent, task, outdoor, and security lighting.
General Lighting includes traditional chandeliers, downlights, ceiling lights, kitchen and bathroom lights.
General lighting allows you to carry out your everyday living. Every room in your home will have some form of general lighting.
There are hundreds of different lights available; the light style will depend entirely on your taste.
Accent lighting’s used to highlight features of your home, styling the mood and atmosphere. An example of this would be an adjustable downlight angled towards a fireplace or a downlight over a picture hanging on the wall.
Task lighting is generally installed in the kitchen and home office spaces to enable more straightforward food preparation and work.
For example, spotlights installed underneath kitchen cabinets will greatly illuminate kitchen worktops boosting productivity while making the area more pleasant to work in.
Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting creates outdoor living spaces while securing your home and protecting you from accidents.
Wall lights, bollard lights, in-ground lights and decking lights will significantly enhance the look of your garden.
Security lighting powered by motion sensors keeps burglars away and illuminates the way when you go outside after dark, minimising the risk of tripping and hurting yourself.
We supply and fit all types of garden, outdoor and security lighting.
Whatever lighting you need, one of our Electricians will guide you in making the best choice for each room and outdoor area.
Full & Part Rewiring
Full & Part Wiring is available for new build properties and extensions and re-wiring and part-rewiring on older homes.
Rewiring is generally required every 30 years; properties should have the wiring checked every ten years.
An inspection establishes whether your wiring is okay or needs a full or part rewire. We’ll also check your consumer unit.
All wiring installations conform to the latest wiring regulations (utilising brown wire for live, blue for neutral and yellow/green for earth).
You could need a full rewire if your property has red, black and green cable. Rewires are planned meticulously by our professional Electricians ensuring minimal disruption to you and your family when the work’s undertaken.
Appliance Installation
Purchased a new appliance and discovered there’s no plug, and it needs wiring into its own circuit?
This is something we can help you with.
Some appliances need wiring into their own circuits. Built-in ovens and hobs are common examples.
Don’t do this yourself. Use a qualified electrician who will ensure the appliance is installed to the required regulations.
We offer a complete appliance connection and installation service.
Earthing & Bonding
Household electrical systems include earthing and Bonding which is put in place for safety to prevent electric shocks.
Any electrical work undertaken in the home will include the checking of the earthing and Bonding to ensure it’s safe as per the BS7671 standards.
Many older homes in the area have old-style earthing and Bonding which isn’t up to current regulations.
If you have an older property and are unsure about your earthing and Bonding, let one of our electricians check it for you.
EICR Certificates
Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) are performed by our electricians, who can visit your property at a convenient time to undertake the inspection. If you let a property, then the EICR is a legal requirement at the start of each new tenancy or every five years.
The inspection will verify your electrical system is safe for use and allow one of our electricians to issue the relevant certification. The certificate can be produced on request to your tenants or letting agents to prove your property is safe.
We also offer portable appliance testing (PAT), where we check and test all plugin appliances. PAT testing isn’t a legal requirement but a favoured optional extra by many landlords.
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is highly recommended for landlords and business owners. If you rent a property or run a business, an electrical accident caused by a faulty appliance is a real possibility.
As a landlord or employer, you have a responsibility to ensure the safety of your tenants and employees. PAT testing ensures the portable appliances in your property or workplace are safe for use and don’t pose an electrical accident threat.
Therefore it’s good practice to undertake PAT testing every 1-2 years for added protection and peace of mind.
One of our electricians will visit your property or premises at a convenient time and test all your portable appliances, which range from small devices such as kettles to larger stationary plug-in appliances like washing machines.
Work premises will have appliances and tools used for their day-to-day trade. These will be checked and tested also. Appliances are thoroughly inspected for wear and tear and signs of electrical damage before being tested for continuity, insulation and polarity.
Once tested and the electricians are satisfied, the appliance is safe. It’s passed. Any appliances that don’t pass testing can be repaired or replaced.
Electrical Installation
Our electricians are highly competent in designing, installing and upgrading electrical systems.
Many older homes don’t have electrical systems to cope with the electrical demands of modern-day living.
Same with businesses that don’t have an electrical system to cope with production and running machinery.
We can install a new electrical system or upgrade your existing one, whether it’s in your home or business.
Fault Finding & Repairs
We offer a fault-finding and repair service for electrical problems in local homes and businesses, with no call-out charges.
A local electrician swiftly identifies and corrects faults, so your electrical system runs appropriately and doesn’t pose an electrocution or fire risk.
Typical faults include buzzing or humming of consumer units, fuses that trip regularly, burn marks on sockets and switches, burning smells coming from the system and arcing noises.
Most faults are quick and straightforward to repair, often involving minor replacements or adjustments.
Outdoor Power
Outdoor sockets are ideal for homes with outdoor living areas and gardens.
Outdoor power makes entertaining and gardening so much easier.
They enable the safe and easy connection of portable lighting or power tools like lawnmowers and leaf blowers.
The sockets are fitted to the best areas of your exterior walls by an electrician who then connects the socket to your power supply.
The sockets are made to withstand the outdoor elements for many years with robust construction and heavy-duty sprung covers.
The covers also keep plugs in position, stopping them from being pulled out in the event of a stretched cord.
Built-in RCD fuses are an optional extra for increased safety.
Security Lighting
Security lighting is a must-have addition to your CCTV and burglar alarms which feature at most commercial premises and many homes.
Lighting deters unwanted intruders who like to operate under cover of darkness, where they’re much less likely to be seen and identified.
Motion sensor lighting will activate as soon as an intruder walks passed, or timed lighting that provides constant light after dark will prevent them from entering in the first place.
The intruder will also notice you have CCTV and an alarm (we’ll position the lighting so they see your security systems).
One of our electricians will visit your property after dark and determine where all the vulnerable at-risk areas are.
A cost-effective lighting system is designed to cover these areas. The system will include the latest LED bulb technology, ensuring your security lighting system is very cost-effective to run.
Smoke & Heat Alarms
A fire will consume a property in minutes. It’s for this reason every home and business should have adequate smoke and heat alarms fitted.
While regular battery-powered smoke alarms are better than no alarms, they are not good enough for complete safety.
Homes should have mains-powered interconnected alarms on every floor of the house and ideally in multiple rooms.
If a fire occurs in one room, all alarms are activated, alerting everyone in the building so they can escape quickly.
One of our qualified electricians will analyse your home and design a fully functioning heat and smoke alarm system.
The system will be linked, powered by electricity and feature backup batteries that’ll provide power in the event of a power cut.
We also fit specialised smoke and heat alarms made for the hard of hearing, disabled and older persons.
Those that are harder to notify and can’t escape quickly.

Emergency services include no call-out charges or hidden extras. Rest assured, you’ll pay a fair price when using our Southend Electrician.
Common Electrical Faults
Electrical faults can arise for various reasons, and some of the most common ones include:
Power Cuts
Power cuts are usually down to an issue with the power network. Power is generally restored swiftly. In the event of a power cut, contact your electricity provider to confirm it’s a network issue. If not, then there’s an issue with your electrical system that requires attention.
Circuit Breaker Tripping
Tripping occurs when the circuit breaker shuts off the electrical flow due to excessive current. If circuit breakers trip constantly, check that no sockets are overloaded (too many appliances plugged into a single outlet) otherwise, there’s probably an issue with the electrical system, such as a faulty fuse or damaged wiring.
Damaged Wiring & Components
Accidents do happen. If your electrical system is accidentally damaged or flooded, it should be inspected by an electrician to verify its safety and undertake repairs if necessary.
Burning Signs & Smells
Signs of burning on sockets and switches or burning smells indicate a fault within the electrical system. Get it checked ASAP, as your system poses a risk of an electrical fire.
Buzzing Noises
Buzzing from the consumer unit, sockets, or switches indicates a loose, damaged or overloaded wire. Buzzing indicates a potential fire hazard and should be inspected ASAP.
Same Day Service With No Call Out Charges
In an electrical emergency, time is of the essence. We are dedicated to providing prompt, same-day service to address your electrical issues quickly and efficiently.
Same-day emergency visits include no call-out charges.
