Electrical Emergencies
Electrical faults can arise for various reasons, and some of the most common ones include:
- Power Cuts: Power cuts are usually caused by an issue with the power network. Power is generally restored swiftly. If you experience a power cut, contact your electricity provider to confirm it’s a network issue. If not, there’s an issue with your electrical system that requires attention.
- Circuit Breaker Tripping : Tripping occurs when the circuit breaker shuts off the electrical flow due to excessive current. If circuit breakers trip a lot, check that no sockets are overloaded (too many appliances in one socket). Otherwise, the issue is likely with the electrical system. This could be a faulty fuse or damaged wiring.
- Damaged Wiring & Components: Accidents do happen. If your electrical system is damaged or flooded, an electrician should inspect it to verify its safety and make necessary repairs.
- Burning Signs & Smells: Signs of burning on sockets and switches or burning smells indicate a fault within the electrical system. Get it checked ASAP, as your system poses a risk of an electrical fire.
- Buzzing Noises: Buzzing from the consumer unit, sockets, or switches indicates a loose, damaged or overloaded wire. Buzzing indicates a potential fire hazard and should be inspected ASAP.
Please contact us if you have an electrical emergency or experience any of the above faults, we will get an electrician out to you ASAP.
Autumn Electrical Work 2024
The autumn months—September, October, and November—are ideal for electrical work this season offers the best conditions to ensure your home or business is safe and ready for the colder months.
Our NICEIC registered Electricians are ready to help whether you’re considering a consumer unit upgrade, rewiring, or outdoor electrical installations. Here’s why autumn is the perfect time to book your electrical work with us.
Milder Weather For Outdoor Work
Autumn’s cooler, more predictable weather makes it ideal for outdoor electrical projects. In Southend, we don’t experience extreme temperatures, so electricians can work safely without delays. Whether installing security lighting, setting up outdoor power points, or upgrading your electrical system, TM Hughes & Son Electrical Services Ltd ensures minimal disruption and high-quality results.
Preparing for Winter’s Higher Demand
As winter approaches, your electrical system will face increased pressure from heating, lighting, and appliance use. Now is the time to upgrade your consumer unit, ensuring your system can handle the extra load.
If your fuse board is outdated, upgrading to a modern consumer unit with RCD protection safeguards your property against electrical faults during the winter months. Additionally, autumn is the best time to conduct full or partial rewiring, especially if your property’s wiring is outdated or faulty.
Easier Access to Electricians
With the summer home improvement rush behind us, autumn provides more flexible scheduling for electrical services. TM Hughes & Son Electrical Services Ltd offers quicker turnaround times, allowing you to complete consumer unit upgrades, rewiring, or outdoor lighting installations before winter.
Outdoor Lighting & Power Solutions
As the evenings grow darker, autumn is perfect for installing outdoor lighting to enhance safety, security, and aesthetics. TM Hughes & Son Electrical Services Ltd offers expert installations tailored to your security or ambient garden lighting needs. We also provide reliable outdoor power solutions, ensuring your garden office, shed, or workshop has safe and compliant electrical access.
Preventing Winter Breakdowns
Scheduling electrical work in autumn helps you avoid costly emergency repairs in winter. Cold weather can make repairs more difficult and expensive, especially when electrician availability is limited. Our team conducts thorough inspections to identify potential issues with consumer units, wiring, or outdoor lighting, ensuring your electrical system is reliable throughout winter.
Energy Efficiency Improvements
Autumn is also the best time to improve your home’s energy efficiency. TM Hughes & Son Electrical Services Ltd can help reduce energy bills by installing LED lighting or smart heating controls, keeping your property comfortable and efficient during the colder season.

Consumer Units
We install and upgrade consumer units, which are the most vital part of your electrical system. The consumer Unit (the fuse board) switches on and off the power to your home.
The Consumer Unit contains fuses. They trip when overloaded, cutting the power flow. This stops electric shock and overloads that could harm people and appliances.
Modern Consumer Units use a combination of RCD, MCB and RCBO fuse. Each has a switch that ‘trips’ in the event of overload, cutting power. Fuses are reactivated by flicking the switch back on.
Each part of your electrical system has a fuse. This includes sockets, lighting, the cooker, and smoke alarms. RCDs (Residual Current Devices) protect against electrocution and fires. MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) protect circuits and appliances from overheating and overloading.
We use a mix of RCDs and MCBs. They give full protection for your home. And they do it at a low price.
RCBO fuses do the job of both RCD and MCB fuses, protecting people and circuits/appliances. They are the safest and preferred option for installing/upgrading consumer units, but they are the most expensive.
All units for consumers are built from non-combustible metal. The latest wiring rules make them. We’ll ensure your home is safe and legal when fitting or upgrading a unit.
If you live in an older home, you may still have a traditional ‘fuse box’. In that case, you should upgrade it. Old fuse boards are common in older-style Southend homes. While they still work and are legal, they are not as safe as modern Consumer Units.
Is it time you fitted a new consumer unit?
Sockets
Modern homes use many portable electrical appliances. Some older ones don’t have enough power points.
Our Southend Electricians can add new sockets to your home in any location.
Additionally, we can install sockets into new build properties and extensions.
Sockets are powered by live, neutral earth cables connected to your consumer unit.
The cable runs around your home, connecting to other sockets on the way and finally returning to the consumer unit. In the electrical trade, this installation is known as the ‘ring main’.
The live cable connects to the back of the faceplates so you can plug in and power your appliances.
The faceplates screw into backboxes inside the wall (sometimes on the wall). The backbox keeps the cable out of the way, preventing electrocution.
Faceplates mustn’t be loose, missing screws, or cracked. This is a potential electrocution hazard.
We can replace and upgrade old and damaged faceplates. You can choose from standard, white plastic, and decorative plastic styles. You can also choose from metal, stainless steel, and wood styles, and you can match these with your interior.
New sockets include one, two, and three gangs, single, double, or triple. Built-in RCDs and USB ports are optional. You can use them to run your appliances while charging your smartphones. We’ll fit any socket you need, including appliance switches and cooker switches, ethernet sockets, telephone sockets, shaver units, and fused connection units (for wired appliances).
Adding power to your outdoor areas with outdoor sockets lets you use lawnmowers, tools, and lighting. You can use them without the inconvenient, easily pulled out, and tripping hazard of extension leads from inside the house. RCD sockets are the best option outdoors. Preventing electrocution if you ever cut through a cable while mowing the lawn or trimming a hedge.
Lighting
TM Hughes Electricians are lighting experts with years of experience installing, upgrading, and repairing lighting.
Expert lighting design improves the feel and atmosphere of your home. It makes day-to-day activities easier and enhances security.
We fit all types of lighting. This includes general, accent, task, outdoor, and security lighting.
General Lighting includes traditional chandeliers, downlights, ceiling, and kitchen and bathroom lights.
General lighting allows you to carry out your everyday living. Every room in your home will have some form of general lighting.
Hundreds of lights are available; the style will depend entirely on your taste.
Accent lighting highlights features of your home, styling the mood and atmosphere. For example, an adjustable downlight can be angled towards a fireplace or placed over a picture hanging on the wall.
Task lighting is in kitchens and home offices. It helps with food prep and work.
For example, spotlights installed under kitchen cabinets will greatly light worktops. They will boost productivity and make the area more pleasant to work in.
Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting creates outdoor living spaces. It also secures your home and protects you from accidents.
Wall lights, bollard lights, in-ground lights, and decking lights will greatly improve your garden’s appearance.
Motion sensors power security lighting. It keeps burglars away and illuminates your path outside after dark, minimising the risk of tripping and hurting yourself.
We supply and fit all types of garden, outdoor and security lighting.
Whatever lighting you need. One of our electricians will help you make the best choice for each room and outdoor area.
Full & Part Rewiring
We offer full and partial wiring for new builds, extensions, and rewiring of older homes.
Rewiring is needed every 30 years. Properties should check the wiring every ten years.
An inspection establishes whether your wiring is okay or needs a full or part rewire. We’ll also check your consumer unit.
All wiring installations conform to the latest wiring regulations. They use brown wire for live, blue for neutral, and yellow/green for earth.
You could need a full rewire if your property has red, black and green cable. Our professional electricians plan fires carefully. They ensure that the work disrupts you and your family as little as possible.
Appliance Installation
I purchased a new appliance and discovered there’s no plug, and it needs wiring into its circuit.
This is something we can help you with.
Some appliances need wiring into their circuits. Built-in ovens and hobs are common examples.
Don’t do this yourself. Use a qualified electrician. They will ensure the appliance is installed to the required rules.
We offer a complete appliance connection and installation service.
Earthing & Bonding
Household electrical systems include earthing and bonding. They are for safety to prevent electric shocks.
Any electrical work in the home will include checking the earthing and bonding to ensure it’s safe per the BS7671 standards.
Many older homes in the area have old-style earthing and Bonding. It isn’t up to current rules.
If you have an older property and are unsure about its earthing and bonding, let one of our electricians check it.
EICR Certificates
Our electricians perform Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR). They can visit your property conveniently to do the inspection. If you let a property, the EICR is a legal requirement at the start of each new tenancy or every five years.
The inspection will check that your electrical system is safe and allow one of our electricians to issue the relevant certification. You can produce the certificate on request. Show it to your tenants or letting agents to prove your property is safe.
We also offer portable appliance testing (PAT). We check and test all plug-in appliances. PAT testing isn’t a legal requirement but a favoured optional extra by many landlords.
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is highly recommended for landlords and business owners. If you rent a property or run a business, a faulty appliance could cause an electrical accident.
As a landlord or employer, you are responsible for the safety of your tenants and employees. PAT testing ensures that your property or workplace’s portable appliances are safe. They don’t pose an electrical accident threat.
So, it’s good to do PAT testing every 1-2 years. This provides added protection and peace of mind.
One of our electricians will visit your property or premises at a convenient time. They will test all your portable appliances. These include small devices, like kettles. They also include larger stationary plug-in ones, like washing machines.
Workplaces will have appliances and tools for their trade. They will also be checked and tested. We inspect appliances for wear and tear and signs of electrical damage. Then, we test them for continuity, insulation, and polarity.
Once tested and the electricians are satisfied, the appliance is safe. It’s passed. Any appliances that don’t pass testing can be repaired or replaced.

Fault Finding & Repairs
We offer a fault-finding and repair service for electrical problems in local homes and businesses, with no call-out charges.
A local electrician swiftly finds and fixes faults. This keeps your electrical system safe. It won’t pose a risk of electrocution or fire.
Typical faults include consumer units buzzing or humming, fuses that trip frequently, burn marks on sockets and switches, burning smells, and arcing noises.
Most faults are quick to fix. They are often simple and involve small changes.
Outdoor Power
Outdoor sockets are ideal for homes with outdoor living areas and gardens.
Outdoor power makes entertaining and gardening so much easier.
They enable the safe and easy connection of portable lighting. They also connect power tools like lawnmowers and leaf blowers.
An electrician fits the sockets to your exterior walls. They put them in the best areas and connect them to your power supply.
The sockets can withstand the outdoor elements for many years. They have strong construction and heavy-duty sprung covers.
The covers also keep plugs in position, stopping them from being pulled out in the event of a stretched cord.
Built-in RCD fuses are an optional extra for increased safety.
Security Lighting
Security lighting is a must-have addition to your CCTV and burglar alarms. It is common at most commercial premises and many homes.
Lighting deters unwanted intruders. They like to operate in darkness, where they’re less likely to be seen and identified.
Motion sensor lights will turn on when an intruder walks by. Timed lights will stay on after dark to stop them from entering.
The intruder will also notice you have CCTV and an alarm. We’ll position the lighting so they see your security systems.
One of our electricians will visit your property after dark and identify vulnerable and at-risk areas.
A cost-effective lighting system is designed to cover these areas. The system will have the newest LED bulb technology. This will ensure that your security lights are cost-effective.
Smoke & Heat Alarms
A fire will consume a property in minutes. For this reason, every home and business should have adequate smoke and heat alarms.
While regular battery-powered smoke alarms are better than no alarms, they are not good enough for complete safety.
Homes should have mains-powered interconnected alarms. They should be on every house floor and ideally in multiple rooms.
If a fire occurs in one room, all alarms are activated, alerting everyone in the building so they can escape quickly.
One of our qualified electricians will analyse your home and design a fully functioning heat and smoke alarm system.
The system will be linked and powered by electricity, and it will feature backup batteries that will provide power in the event of a power cut.
We also fit specialised smoke and heat alarms for the hard of hearing, disabled and older persons.
Those that are harder to notify and can’t escape quickly.
