Domestic Electrical Services
TM Hughes & Son Electricians are happy to undertake all domestic electrical jobs ranging from simple upgrades to the electrical system (such as changing switches and sockets) to larger jobs like rewiring and installing new consumer units.
Here are some examples of everyday electrical work in domestic properties
Alarms – Household smoke and heat alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are essential safety feature. While battery versions are standard wired-in, alarms are a safer option as there’s no risk of the battery running out.
Consumer Units – Consumer unit installation and upgrades. Read more below.
Installation Of Appliances – We install all kinds of electric appliances such as cookers, hobs, extraction fans etc. Larger appliances that require more power are wired into a circuit. We also install appliance circuits where they are needed but not currently present.
Earthing & Bonding – Earthing and Bonding (if relevant) are checked every time a new electrical installation is undertaken. Earthing prevents electric shock in the event of a fault.
Electric Heating Repair – Numerous homes in Maldon are not connected to the gas grid and use electric heating instead. We install, maintain and repair all types of electric heating, including storage heaters, underfloor heating, electric radiators and immersion heaters.
Fault Finding – The continuous tripping of fuses, burning smells coming from sockets, flickering lights, or non-existent power in sockets indicates a fault somewhere in the electrical system. Faults are quickly identified with testing equipment. Once established, we can carry out the necessary repairs to rectify the fault.
Lighting – Our electricians are lighting specialists. Read more about our lighting services below.
Outdoor Power – Gone are the days when you had to use an extension lead plugged indoors to power your lawnmower or other outdoor power tools. Outdoor sockets make garden work so much easier and are useful for outdoor lighting.
Sockets – Extra sockets can be added around the home and/or upgraded to modern designs with USB ports for charging devices and built-in RCD fuses, which act as a power breaker. Lots of designs of sockets are available in multiple colours and materials.
Showers – Electric showers supply hot water instantly. We fit standard, eco and digital electric showers and the corresponding circuits required to power the shower.
Telephone Points – Telephone points are fitted or relocated to provide more convenient positioning for landlines and wifi routers.
Consumer Units
Consumer Unit installation & upgrades, all installations conform to the required 17th edition and Part P building regulations.
Your consumer unit regulates the power delivered to your circuits, sockets and appliances. Various fuses are used, which cut off power in the event of a fault, a crucial safety feature.
Modern consumer units with the latest fuses are incredibly safe. The fuses protect against electrocution, electrical fires and overload and damage to circuits and appliances. The metal casing ensures a fire is contained and won’t spread (don’t worry, consumer unit fires are extremely rare).
If you have an old fuse box, one that’s mounted on a wooden base that uses traditional fuses with fuse wire (unlike modern fuses which utilise switches), it’s high time for an upgrade. We’ll safely remove your old fusebox and connect the latest consumer unit with a mains switch and various fuses, which include
RCD’s – Prevents electrocution to dwellers and electrical fires.
MCB’s – Protects electrical circuits from overload, damage and fires.
RCBO’s – An all in one fuse that prevents electrocution, overload, circuit damage and fires.
Each fuse is connected to a part of the electrical system such as sockets, lighting, shower, cooker etc. If there’s a fault in the system, the fuse will ‘trip’ cutting power instantly, keeping you, your family and your home safe.

Rewires should be performed every 30 years, an inspection (by a qualified electrician) once a decade establishes whether it’s time for a rewire or partial rewire.
