Autumn Electrical 2024
Autumn is the ideal time to undertake electrical work if you’re a homeowner or run a business in Maldon. Here’s why the months of September, October and November are ideal:
Milder Weather
Autumn in Maldon has milder temperatures, which create a more comfortable working environment for electricians. This is particularly beneficial for extensive electrical projects, as it reduces the strain on workers who might otherwise be dealing with summer heat. Comfortable conditions increase productivity and allow our electricians to focus on quality craftsmanship without the pressure of working in extreme weather.
Less Competition
As the busy summer season winds down, many homeowners and businesses turn their attention indoors or to less intensive projects. This decrease in demand means that our electricians are often more available during autumn. Scheduling electrical work in autumn is often more flexible and results in quicker project timelines.
Preparation For Winter
As the temperatures begin to drop, autumn becomes the perfect time to ensure your electrical systems are ready for the challenges of winter. It’s essential to check and maintain heating systems and any related electrical components to avoid unexpected breakdowns when you need them most. This might include upgrading consumer units to ensure they can handle the increased load from heating appliances and checking circuit breakers for any signs of wear. Proactive maintenance can save you from inconvenient and costly repairs during the peak winter months.
Energy Efficiency Upgrades
With winter approaching, many homeowners and businesses are considering enhancing their energy efficiency. Autumn is an excellent time to implement upgrades that can significantly save energy bills. For instance, replacing outdated lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED options brightens up your space and reduces your overall energy consumption. Additionally, outdoor lighting is useful as the days get shorter.
Holiday Preparations
As autumn progresses, thoughts turn to the upcoming holiday season. This is an ideal time to arrange electrical work to enhance your home or business during festive gatherings. Installing outdoor sockets can make it easy to power holiday decorations, outdoor lighting, or even heaters for those who wish to entertain outdoors.
Longer Days For Planning
Autumn offers a balanced amount of daylight, allowing for effective planning and execution of larger electrical projects. This extra time can be particularly beneficial for tasks that require careful consideration, such as installing new consumer units, wiring upgrades, or extensive outdoor lighting systems.
Have Your Electrical Work Done This Autumn
Autumn is an ideal time to undertake domestic or commercial electrical work. The milder weather, reduced competition, and the opportunity to prepare for winter make this season a smart choice for any electrical upgrades or installations. Whether you want to enhance your energy efficiency or prepare for holiday celebrations, we can help you. Please get in touch for a free, no-obligation survey and quote.
Domestic Electrical Services
TM Hughes & Son Electricians have worked on many homes in and around Maldon. Our Electricians have done just about every kind of Electrical job out there.
Typical services include fitting or updating consumer units, replacing and fitting sockets, 4full or part rewiring, earthing, and bonding. We also install lighting and outdoor power and do lots more.
We make sure all our work is high-quality and meets current legal standards and Part P building regulations.
We always work in a way that’s efficient and tidy so we don’t disturb your daily routine.
Consumer Units
We fit new consumer units and replace old fuse boxes that meet BS EN 61439 standards with the latest RCD fuses.
Many older homes around Maldon still have old fuse boxes. They’re not illegal but not as safe as new consumer units. These have Residual Current Devices (RCD fuses) and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs).
If someone touches a live wire, RCDs keep you and your family safe from shocks. MCBs protect your circuits and appliances from getting overloaded and prevent electrical fires.
We can also fit RCBOs, which do the jobs of both RCDs and MCBs.
If there’s an electrical fault, the RCD, MCB, or RCBO will ‘trip’ immediately, cutting the power. You can easily turn them back on with a switch.
Old fuses stop power by melting a wire, which is slower and can be a fire risk. If your fuse box or consumer unit is old, we can give you a free quote to upgrade it.
Socket Installs & Upgrades
Nowadays, people use more appliances than ever, and often, homes don’t have enough sockets. Our Maldon Electricians can add more sockets to your home in convenient places.
Modern sockets come with features like built-in RCDs, which cut power if a cable is cut accidentally, and USB ports, so you can charge your phone and use appliances simultaneously.
Big appliances, like cookers and boilers, are directly wired to connection units with fuses.
If you’ve redecorated or refurbished your home, you might want new socket faceplates to match your new look. We change old faceplates to new ones, like stainless steel, other metals, coloured plastic, or even wood.
It’s time to upgrade your sockets if they get hot, are cracked, hanging off the wall, or have loose screws. These are all safety risks and should be fixed right away.
We can also install sockets outside, which are great for lawnmowers, power tools, and portable lights. All our outdoor sockets are waterproof and dustproof with protective covers. We can also install RCD sockets outside for extra safety.
Rewiring Full & Part
Electrical cables last around 30 years. You might need one if your home hasn’t been rewired in the previous three decades. Homes should be checked every ten years for deteriorated wires.
We can survey the cables in your home and determine whether you need a full or partial rewire. We’ll also check your consumer unit and ensure it’s safe. We also regularly carry out wiring installations on newly built properties and extensions.
All wiring/rewiring work is done according to the latest regulations, utilising modern twin and earth cables that cope with the demands of the present-day home.
Lighting
The lighting in your home matters. When it’s done well, it makes each room feel better and more comfortable.
Our electricians are knowledgeable about lighting design and installation. They understand all kinds of lighting and will plan each room according to your needs.
Every room needs its kind of lighting. The living room, kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms all need different kinds.
We illuminate these rooms with general lighting, including chandeliers, recessed lights, and spotlights, all placed in the right spots for the best look.
We also installed task lighting in the kitchen, bathroom, and home office, which makes everyday tasks easier.
Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting makes outdoor spaces safer and more comfortable. Homes with sensor-activated security lights are less likely to be broken into, and people can see better outside at night, which means fewer accidents.
Lots of people in Maldon get garden and landscape lighting. It turns their gardens into places they can enjoy in the warm months.
We install modern LED lights and traditional halogen bulbs. They can be mounted on walls, bollards, the ground, or decking.
There are many kinds to choose from. One of our Electricians will plan a lighting setup that’s just right for your outdoor area.
Appliance Installation
We have a service for connecting and installing electrical appliances.
Built-in ovens need to be wired into their electrical circuit. If you don’t have one, we can fit one for you. Our team installs appliances quickly and without disruption.
One of us will turn off the power to the cooker circuit, remove your old appliance, and wire in the new one.
After installing it, we run tests to ensure everything is safe and working right.
Earthing & Bonding
We check the earthing and bonding during electrical work in your home.
This is a key part of your electrical system that sends the current to the ground, which stops you from getting shocked.
After installation, upgrade, or repair, our electricians ensure the earthing and bonding meet the BS7671 legal standard.
Fault Finding & Repairs
Electrical systems can experience different problems. Components like lights, switches, sockets, and consumer units can develop faults. A qualified electrician should be consulted if you notice smells or noises or see something that seems wrong.
Common issues are lights that flicker, consumer units that buzz, burning smells, and crackling sounds. One of our electricians will test your system to find out where the problem is.
Usually, fixing things like broken sockets and fuses or making sure wires are tight is all that’s needed. It’s a quick and affordable fix.
Outdoor Power
We set up outdoor power for people with outdoor spaces. We put outdoor sockets on outside walls in easy-to-reach spots. Once they’re installed, you can plug in outdoor lights or power tools.
Having an outdoor socket makes lawn mowing easier. You won’t need to use an indoor extension cord anymore.
These sockets are tough and waterproof. Their covers spring shut to keep dirt and water from the electrical parts.
They come with standard RCD fuses for greater safety. These fuses protect you if a power cord gets cut.
Security Lighting
We have a service for designing and installing security lighting for homes and businesses in the area.
If your property is not well-lit, it could attract burglars and thieves. This is true for both homes and commercial buildings. Security lighting helps by lighting up dark spots where criminals might hide. One of our electricians will find any spots around your property that might be at risk.
We can install lights that turn on when someone enters the area (motion sensor lighting) or lights that stay on all night. Studies show that well-lit doors, windows, and walls are less likely to be broken into.
The security lighting we put in is made to last outside for a long time and handle all kinds of weather. We use modern, energy-saving LED bulbs in our lights. This means your new security lighting won’t cost much to use.
Electrical Emergencies
Emergency Electricians are available in Maldon for domestic and commercial call-outs 24 hours a day, seven days a week for both Domestic and Commercial properties, with no call-out charges. Call: 01621 881560
Our 24-hour Electricians are fully qualified to deal with any electrical emergency that may arise, are local and can be with you quickly.
If you have an electrical problem, call us immediately. Never attempt to fix an electrical fault yourself. Use our safe emergency electrical services.
If you have a power cut, call your supplier to determine whether the cut is due to a supply fault. If so, your electricity will come back on automatically.
Not a supply fault? Check the fuses in your consumer unit. A fuse may have tripped, causing the loss of power. Turn the fuse back on.
If the power doesn’t come back and all fuses are on, the power cut could be for several reasons. We’ll diagnose and fix the fault with your electrical system.
We recognise the urgency of electrical emergencies and are committed to providing a timely and efficient response with a visit on the same day.
Electrical Issues
If you’re having any of these problems, please get in touch with us:
- Frequent Fuse Trips: If fuses trip a lot, it might mean too much power on a circuit, a short circuit, or a broken appliance. An electrician will check your system, determine what’s wrong, and fix or adjust things as needed.
- Sparking from Units and Sockets: Sparking or arcing from electrical parts can cause a fire. An electrician will take care of this safely, fixing or changing damaged parts.
- Electric Shocks: Bad wiring, broken appliances, or damaged outlets can shock you. Our team will find out why and fix it.
- Burning Smells: If you smell something burning, it could be overheating parts or wiring problems, and that’s a fire risk.
- Burned Sockets and Switches: If sockets and switches look burned or have marks, it means they’re too hot or there’s electrical arcing.
- Damaged Electrical System: Things like floods or accidents can hurt your home’s electrical system and be dangerous. Our electricians will fix any damage quickly and safely.
- Any Other Problems or Worries: If you have other issues or are worried about your electrical system, please call us.

Landlords Certificates/EICR
Landlords must make sure their properties are safe for tenants. We offer Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) and Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) for landlords.
EICR and PAT Testing check if your rental property’s electrical system is safe at the start of a tenancy and throughout it. They also make sure appliances are safe with CE markings.
This helps show that a qualified Electrician has ensured your property is safe and legal. It also helps with your insurance and protects you from an electrical accident.
EICRs are suggested for all properties, including HMOs, every five years and at the start of each new tenancy. PAT Testing is necessary for HMO landlords, but many private landlords also do it for extra safety.
Both EICR and PAT Testing are affordable. During the EICR, we check the entire electrical system. This includes the consumer unit, earthing, fuses, wiring, sockets, and lights. We fix any problems and give you a certificate when we’re done.
PAT Testing checks portable appliances like fridges, washing machines, and irons to ensure they’re safe for tenants.
Smoke & Heat Alarms
Modern smoke and heat alarms should be in every home, at least one on each floor. The alarms should also be connected so they all sound simultaneously.
Alarms should be wired into the main’s electricity supply so they always work. It’s amazing how many homeowners let the smoke alarm batteries go flat and don’t replace them.
We offer a full smoke and heat alarm installation service by professional electricians. Risk assessments are carried out in each home. The residents are also considered so we can design and fit a system geared towards the vulnerable if necessary.
A smoke and heat alarm system is designed and fitted to place an alarm in the correct areas.
The alarms are interlinked, connected to the mains supply, and feature backup batteries, so they work even if electricity is absent.
