Home Upgrades
The Electrical system in your home can be upgraded in many different ways to make your life easier. Sockets and switches can be added to your existing electrical system at any point that’s most convenient to you.
If you have re-decorated, you may want the faceplates changed, so your sockets and switches change to match your decor—a simple, straightforward job for our fully qualified electricians. Extra telephone points can be installed anywhere in your home, or we can help upgrade your internet system.
It’s not just indoors. Electricians can add power points outside to eliminate the need for extension leads when using outdoor power tools such as electric lawnmowers.
You might have new appliances that need to be hardwired into the electrical system, such as an electric oven or hob. We can disconnect any existing appliances you have and connect your new appliance.
Every home should save smoke alarms, and every home with a fuel-burning appliance should have a carbon monoxide alarm. We can connect alarms into your electrical system, which will ensure you and your family are always notified immediately in case of fire or a carbon monoxide leak. The safety systems also feature a backup battery in the event of a power cut.

You may want a whole new lighting system installed. We can design an installation specific to your home and requirements. When planning lighting systems, we use around a dozen different factors to determine the best type of light for each location in each room.
For instance, the size of the room, the natural light received during the day, features of the room, your unique tastes etc. Please see our lighting page for more details. Our electricians have installed many domestic lighting systems over the years and have the experience to design and install the very best system to illuminate your home.
Outdoor areas need lighting. Too we fit all types of outdoor/garden decorative, task and security lighting also.
Consumer Unit Installation and Upgrades
We fit new consumer units or upgrade existing consumer units.
The consumer unit is the most crucial part of any electrical system. The first port of call for Electricity as it runs into your home from the mains supply.
The consumer unit protects you and your family from electrocution and your electrical system and appliances from overload and subsequent damage.
All new consumer units fitted are the latest 17th edition types made from non-combustible metal. All Consumer units use RCD fuses residual current devices, which will instantly switch off the electricity supply if there’s a fault such as overheating or excessive electrical current.
RCD’s prevent electrical fires and electrocution. MCB’s (miniature circuit breakers) are fitted into the system to protect the electrical circuits and prevent fires.
RCD/MCB are the most common types of consumer units fitted as they are generally the cheapest. We also fit RCBO type consumer units equipped with RCBO fuses (residual-current circuit breaker with overcurrent protection) which do the job of the RCD and MCB in one.
If your consumer unit hasn’t been upgraded in many years, then maybe it’s time to consider an upgrade. If you have an old-style fuse box mounted onto a wooden base with traditional wire fuses, then you definitely need an upgrade.
If you’re concerned about your consumer unit to give us a call, an electrician will come round to check your consumer unit and confirm it’s safe.
Rewiring Full & Partial
TM Hughes electrical contractors wire new installations, extensions and full or part rewire existing properties.
Electrical wires last many years. They are hidden from view and rarely given a second thought (unless the electrical system develops a problem). If your property hasn’t been rewired in the past 30 years, then it may be time for a rewire.
Rewiring ensures the electrical system is in line with the current regulations and that it’s safe. It would help if you had your home inspected every ten years to ensure the wiring’s in order. We find many old systems are not up to the electrical demands of modern living, which has increased as time has gone on.
For those building extensions, you’ll definitely need a new wiring installation for your addon, and it’s likely to work will need doing to the existing wiring and consumer unit. In the event of extending/renovating your home, your wiring will have to conform to the part p building regulations (so it may require upgrading in places)
When any rewiring occurs, the earthing and bonding are also checked, which prevents electric shocks (or worse) to you and your family. We’ll ensure your earthing and bonding adheres to the current BS7671 standard.
Rewiring a home can be very disruptive; that’s why we plan the process meticulously before we start to ensure a minimal amount of disruption. To you and your family while the work’s carried out.
