Choosing The Right Sockets & Switches
Sockets are an integral part of our homes. They carry electricity to our appliances, allowing us to enjoy modern-day living.
Switches, like sockets, have a fundamental role in the home, allowing us to control our lighting and other electrical appliances.
Sockets must be installed correctly and safely; this is where TM Hughes & Son Electrical Services comes into play.
There are several types of Sockets to consider for your home. From single sockets, ideal for isolated appliances, to double sockets that cater to multiple devices simultaneously.
USB sockets are a modern adaptation, perfect for charging mobile devices directly, and shaver sockets are specifically for bathrooms to charge electric shavers and toothbrushes.
In addition to functionality, aesthetics play a key role in socket choice.
Available materials and finishes range from plastic and metal to chrome and brushed steel.
Each offers its unique set of advantages. For instance, plastic sockets are cost-effective and easy to clean, while metal finishes provide a sleek, modern look.
Chrome is known for its shiny, reflective surface, and brushed steel offers a subtle, classy finish.
Making the right choice depends on your individual needs, lifestyle, and home decor.
One of our Electricians will help you make the right decision regarding socket choice and write you a free quote for the work involved.
The Socket Installation Process
The installation process by TM Hughes & Son Electricians is meticulous, safe, and efficient.
Our electricians are well-versed in UK regulations, ensuring that each installation meets the required safety standards.
- Planning the Location: New Sockets can replace old ones in the same location or new/additional locations if required.
- Switching off the Power: Before beginning the work, the power supply to the installation area must be switched off to ensure safety. This is typically done at the fuse box or circuit breaker.
- Preparing the Wall: If it’s a new installation, a hole may need to be cut into the wall to fit the new socket. A wire may need to be run from the consumer to the new socket location.
- Wiring the Socket: The electrician will connect the wires to the new socket. The wires include a live wire (brown), a neutral wire (blue), and an earth wire (green/yellow).
- Securing the Socket: The socket is secured to the wall once the wires are connected. The electrician will carefully check that all screws are tight and that the socket is level.
- Testing: After the power is restored, the electrician will test the socket to ensure it’s wired correctly and safe to use.
