Welcome to TM Hughes & Son Electrical Services Ltd. We provide Earthing & Bonding services in South Woodham Ferrers and the surrounding areas.
An Overview of Earthing and Bonding
The safe use of electrical systems in homes and workplaces is ensured by efficient Earthing and Bonding.
The term ‘Earthing’ denotes the connection of the exposed conductive parts of an electrical circuit, like metal enclosures, to the principal earth terminal of the electrical setup.
This establishes a secure path for electrical current to dissipate into the earth in case of a fault, minimising the chances of electric shock.
It also activates the circuit breaker or fuse to cut off the electricity supply eliminating potential shocks and fire hazards.
‘Bonding’, on the other hand, involves connecting all metallic elements in a property, such as pipes and radiators, to the main earth terminal of the electrical setup.
This ensures all these components share the same electrical potential. Consequently, even in the event of a fault, it prevents a hazardous voltage difference from appearing between separate metal parts, reducing the risk of electric shock when touching two different metal parts simultaneously.
Requirements For Earthing & Bonding
The British Standard BS 7671, or the “18th Edition Wiring Regulations”, dictates the rules for earthing and bonding.
These guidelines, set forth by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the British Standards Institution (BSI), offer detailed instructions to ensure electrical safety.
Your earthing and bonding systems must adhere to the required standards and regulations.
Ensuring Safe Earthing & Bonding
Here are a few steps you can implement to ensure your electrical system complies with safety standards:
Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) includes the checking and testing of your Earthing & Bonding by arranging a detailed inspection and evaluation of your electrical setup by a certified electrician.
We recommend scheduling an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) every 10 years for privately-owned properties and every 5 years for rented properties or at the onset of a new tenancy (a requirement by law of rented properties).
This all-encompassing inspection and testing of your property’s electrical installations, conducted by a certified electrician, will verify the safety of your electrical system and pinpoint potential issues.
Suppose you’ve recently had electrical work done or made modifications to your property. In that case, it is advised to have a professional electrician inspect the earthing and bonding to verify it still adheres to the necessary safety standards.
Monitor your electrical system for any signs of potential faults. Recurring RCD fuses tripping, or shocks when touching electrical appliances could signal issues with your earthing and bonding. An electrician should take a look.
