Consumer Units: Signs You Need A New One
The Consumer Unit is hidden away and generally ignored until an issue occurs with the electrical system.
You and other household members need to know where the consumer unit is so you can shut off the power in case of a fault. Power to the home is shut off via the main switch.
Establish where your consumer unit is and which switch cuts mains power.
If the following points apply to your Consumer Unit, you may need a new one fitted.
Over Ten Years Old
An electrician should inspect an older fusebox to ensure it’s safe and up to the latest electrical standards.
Old School Fuse Box
A fuse box mounted on wood and housing traditional wire fuses needs to be updated. Despite not being illegal, fuse boxes of this era are not as safe as modern consumer units and should be replaced as soon as possible.
Constantly Tripping
If your Consumer Unit’s fuses are constantly tripping, there is a problem somewhere in the electrical system, either a fuse, circuit or the Consumer unit itself. An electrician needs to inspect the fault and offer a solution.
Addition New Circuits
Your Consumer may need to be upgraded if you plan on adding new electrical circuits to your home.
Physically Damaged Or Corroded
A structurally defective or corroded Consumer Unit could present a safety risk. Therefore, a replacement is in order.
Does Not Meet Current Safety Regulations
Electrical systems are subject to safety regulations that change over time. Therefore, you may consider a replacement if your Consumer Unit fails to meet current regulations.
Consumer Units: How They Work
The Consumer Unit is a central hub that distributes electricity to all the electrical circuits throughout your home.
Consumer Units are also known as ‘Fuse Boards’ and ‘Fuse Boxes’, although these terms are dated now.
A series of RCD fuses are located in the Consumer Unit to protect against electrocution of people and overload of the electrical system.
Current flow is measured by an RCD fuse (Residual Current Device) when electricity passes through powering a circuit.
Electrical current flows freely through the circuit, powering the home’s lights, appliances and plugged-in devices.
However, if the circuit is overloaded with too much electrical current, the RCD will ‘trip’ and cut power. This prevents damage to the circuit or electrocution of a person.
The power will remain off until the RCD is switched back on, which restores power to the circuit. If the fault remains, then the RCD will ‘trip’ again.
It is essential to have a Consumer Unit that meets regulation standards to ensure your family’s safety and protect your electrical system from damage and fires.
A qualified electrician should inspect your Consumer Unit if you have any concerns or it is not working correctly.
