Welcome to TM Hughes & Son Electrical Services Ltd. We install Smoke, Heat & Carbon Monoxide Alarms in Basildon and the surrounding areas.
Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms detect the presence of smoke, indicating a possible fire. They use photoelectric sensors (detect larger smoke particles from smouldering fires) or ionization sensors (detect smaller smoke particles from flaming fires). They emit a loud sound to alert occupants.
Heat Alarms
Heat alarms are devices that detect a rapid increase in temperature or a temperature exceeding a certain threshold. These alarms are typically used in places where smoke alarms might give false alarms, such as kitchens or garages.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms detect the presence of carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless, and poisonous gas that can kill. This type of alarm is essential in homes with fuel-burning appliances, as CO is a byproduct of burning fossil fuels.
These alarms can be separate or combined. Combination alarms that detect both smoke and carbon monoxide are becoming more common. These devices offer an all-in-one solution to household safety, with the advantage of needing to install and maintain fewer units.
Should Smoke, Heat & Carbon Monoxide Alarms Be Mains Connected?
- Building regulations require all new build homes to have mains-connected smoke and CO alarms, one on each level.
- Landlords must ensure that a smoke alarm is installed on each storey of the property on which a room is used wholly or partly as living accommodation.
- Landlords must also ensure that a carbon monoxide alarm is present in any room used wholly or partly as living accommodation which contains a solid fuel-burning appliance.
- The Landlord’s responsible for ensuring the alarms are in working order at the start of each new tenancy.
- However, the law doesn’t specifically require these alarms to be hard-wired. Battery-operated alarms are acceptable under these regulations.
Benefits Of Mains Connected Wired & Interlinked Smoke, Heat, Carbon Monoxide Alarms
There are a few key benefits to wiring these alarms:
- Reliability: Wired alarms have a constant power source, so there’s no risk of them failing due to dead batteries.
- Interconnection: In many wired systems, if one alarm detects danger, all alarms in the property will sound, ensuring everyone is alerted.
- Integration with Security Systems: Wired alarms can often be integrated with home security systems, providing centralised control and notifications.
- Back-Up Battery: Mains connected alarms have back-up batteries, so they will still work in the event of power failure.
