Welcome to TM Hughes & Son. Our Electrical work in Loughton includes Earthing & Bonding.
Earthing & Bonding Explained
Earthing: provides a safe path for electricity to flow into the ground if something goes wrong—like a damaged wire or faulty appliance. This stops metal parts, such as the casing of an appliance or pipework, from becoming life and causing electric shocks.
Bonding: connects all the metal parts within a building—such as water and gas pipes—so they stay at the same electrical potential. This means that even if one part becomes live during a fault, there’s no voltage difference between the metal parts, greatly reducing the risk of getting a shock if someone touches more than one simultaneously.
Why You Should Pay Attention To Earthing & Bonding
Neglecting Earthing & Bonding can lead to bad outcomes. Consider a scenario where a fault allows electricity to pass into the metal casing of an appliance. Without a proper earth, touching that appliance could result in severe electric shock. Similarly, if metal pipes (such as those for water or gas) aren’t bonded, they could carry an electrical charge that surprises you when you least expect it. Besides personal safety, inadequate Earthing & Bonding can undermine your insurance coverage and leave you at odds with electrical regulations designed to protect you.
How We Verify Earthing & Bonding
Our Electricians test and inspect the Earthing & Bonding when undertaking any new electrical installation, upgrade or repairs. First, they review the property’s main earth connection. This ensures the connection is secure, corrosion-free, and sized correctly for the system’s demands. Next, they check any supplementary bonding—like connecting metal pipework in bathrooms and kitchens—to ensure these elements meet safety standards. Our Electricians use special tools, such as continuity and impedance testers, to correctly confirm the Earthing & Bonding work.
The Role Of An EICR
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a health check for your property’s electrical system. As part of the EICR, Electricians thoroughly assess Earthing & Bonding arrangements. Inspection and testing will identify any faults or deterioration throughout your electrical system. Our Electricians will provide a detailed report and can remedy any issues found.
