Welcome to TM Hughes & Son. Our Electrical work in Witham includes Earthing & Bonding.
Whether your property in Witham is a newly built home or a centuries-old cottage, maintaining a safe electrical system should be a top priority. One of the most essential components in achieving electrical safety is correct Earthing & Bonding.
Despite how technical it might sound, the idea is straightforward: ensure excess or fault current has a direct path to ground and make sure all metal surfaces in your property are at the same electrical potential.
Earthing & Bonding Explained
Earthing means connecting metal parts of your electrical system (like Consumer Units and appliance housings) to the ground. This way, if a fault causes electricity to escape its intended circuit, the excess current is directed harmlessly into the earth rather than turning metal objects into shock hazards.
If these metal parts aren’t properly bonded, they could carry different voltages during a fault. If someone touches two unbonded metal objects like a water pipe and a gas pipe, they could complete the circuit between them, causing an electric shock. Bonding ensures all metalwork is at the same voltage, so there’s no risk of electricity passing through the person.
Why It Matters
Even a minor electrical issue can be dangerous without adequate Earthing & Bonding. For example, if a washing machine’s internal wiring fails, its metal casing could become live. Anyone touching the washing machine without a proper earth could receive a dangerous electric shock.
Similarly, if metal pipework isn’t bonded, it could carry an electrical charge that causes a surprise shock the next time you run a tap.
Our Inspection & Installation Process
Whenever we undertake a new electrical installation or repairs, we make sure to include thorough checks of the Earthing & Bonding.
Our Electricians inspect the main earthing terminal and verify that the earth electrode or the connection provided by the supply network is in excellent condition. We then confirm that all essential metal components—pipes, structural steel, and so on—are bonded to the main earthing terminal.
Specialised tools like continuity and earth loop impedance testers help us confirm that fault currents will travel safely to the ground.
Why An EICR Is Essential
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) involves inspecting and testing your property’s wiring and electrical components. It covers everything from your system’s overall wear and tear to specific issues like faulty circuit breakers. Checking the Earthing & Bonding is a part of the inspection. If any problems are found, they are noted in a report so repairs can be arranged. Periodic EICRs help you catch issues early before they become hazardous or costly.
