Welcome to TM Hughes & Son. Our Electrical work in Grays includes Earthing & Bonding.
What Is Earthing & Bonding?
Earthing connects metal parts of an electrical system—such as the casing of your consumer unit or metal pipework—to the ground, providing a safe path for fault currents to flow away. This prevents these surfaces from becoming live during a fault, protecting anyone who might touch them from electric shock. It’s like a safety valve that ensures stray electricity is harmlessly directed into the earth rather than through you.
Bonding connects metal parts within a property—like gas and water pipes—so they all share the same electrical potential. This means there’s no voltage difference between them, which reduces the risk of electric shock. Without Bonding, a fault in the electrical system could make one metal part live. In contrast, others remain at a different potential, and touching both simultaneously could result in a dangerous shock.
Why It’s Important for Your Property
Without proper Earthing & Bonding, even a minor electrical fault can escalate into a severe safety issue. A typical scenario is a faulty appliance or frayed wiring. If a live current comes into contact with a metal surface, anyone touching that surface could be seriously shocked or injured. Risk is significantly reduced by ensuring a safe route for electricity travel (Earthing) and ensuring metalwork has consistent voltage levels (Bonding). Earthing and Bonding protect people, electrical devices and building structures.
How Our Electricians Ensure Proper Earthing & Bonding
Our Electricians check the Earthing and Bonding after any electrical work. First, they’ll inspect the primary earthing connection to ensure it’s secure and meets current safety standards. They then examine all bonding cables to confirm that key metal parts—such as gas and water pipes—are correctly connected. Using specialist testing tools, they check the continuity of these connections and measure the resistance between the property and the earth. If issues are found our Electricians will undertake the necessary repairs or upgrades to ensure everything is safe and compliant.
Why You Need an EICR
Earthing & Bonding can degrade over time due to corrosion, accidental damage, or renovations that disturb wiring. That’s where an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) comes in. An EICR inspects your electrical system, from the Consumer Unit to the final circuits. Checking Earthing & Bonding is a core part of this process, helping to guarantee that your system remains safe and compliant. Landlords, in particular, must keep up with these inspections to meet legal obligations and provide tenants with a secure property.
